SSHS Athletes and Parents,
Currently (3/16/20, 1:00pm) here is where we are at. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic CHSAA has a moratorium on Spring sports until April 6 (practice and games). At which time they will re-asses and make a determination on what will occur moving forward. The Steamboat School District is closed for 2 weeks with a re-asses date prior to March 30.
CHSAA has made it clear that coaches are to have no physical contact with athletes. This includes open gyms, off campus coaching and private coaching. During the moratorium athletes can find ways to stay in shape individually, but should not be meeting in groups for "captains practice" or to train. All SSSD facilities have been closed. This includes Gardner Field, the lower practice field, weight room, gyms, etc. All school sponsored activities will either be rescheduled or canceled.
Here are guidelines that I will that I have provided to coaches:
-Do not make plans to organize your teams.
-Do not run team conditioning or workouts.
-Do not organize team gatherings (like dinners)
-Athletes can have INDIVIDUAL optional conditioning and fundamental workouts (please do not do this in a public place).
-Coaches can contact student participants by email, phone and social media regarding optional self-workouts, updates, etc.
- No physical contact, open gyms, weight lifting, off-site workouts with school coaches including volunteers, no in season coach supervision of athletes on school grounds,
-Sunday contact is applicable as are all eligibility rules.
Beyond what I have told you in this email I have no idea of what will happen in the next few days, weeks, months, year. This is a dynamic unprecedented situation that changes daily. I will let you know as things continue to evolve. To say that this is a bummer is a huge understatement, but at this time it's important for athletes, coaches and parents to maintain a positive perspective. Please understand that the goal of all of this is to keep all people healthy and safe. We all have a moral and ethical obligation to work in the best interest of our community, state, and country. Stay healthy!
